Assisted Lifeguard Technology (ALT)
- ALT supports – but does not replace - our fully trained lifeguards. The number of lifeguards on duty is always determined by strict safety guidelines.
- The system can detect signs of swimmer distress and immediately alert lifeguards so they can respond quickly.
- All data is handled securely in line with GDPR. Footage is typically stored for up to seven days and only retained longer if required for an incident investigation.
- Clear signage is displayed in the centre wherever ALT is in operation.
- If you have any questions, please speak to a member of our team.
Customer FAQs
What is Assisted Lifeguard Technology (ALT)?
Assisted Lifeguard Technology (ALT) is an advanced safety system that supports our lifeguards. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) and cameras to monitor the pool in real time, both above and below the water, helping lifeguards quickly identify anyone who may need assistance.
Why do you use Assisted Lifeguard Technology?
ALT gives our lifeguards an extra layer of support and enhances pool safety. The system continuously monitors the whole pool area, helping lifeguards respond even more quickly in an emergency. It works alongside our trained lifeguards as part of a “blended” safety approach, developed in line with Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) guidance.
Does this mean there are fewer lifeguards on duty?
No. ALT is designed to support lifeguards — not replace them. The number of lifeguards on duty is based on strict safety requirements, including pool size, activities taking place and the number of swimmers. The system simply enhances visibility and helps the team work more effectively.
Can AI really detect someone in difficulty?
Yes. The system continuously analyses swimmer movement patterns and can recognise signs of distress or unusual behaviour. If someone may need help, it immediately alerts the lifeguard team so they can respond quickly.
What is Lynxight?
Lynxight is one example of Assisted Lifeguard Technology. It is a cloud-based safety system that uses AI and strategically placed cameras around the pool to detect potential swimmer distress in real time.
Who can see the camera footage?
Footage is not viewable by staff within the centre. Lifeguards receive alerts on their devices showing the location of a concern. Stored images can only be accessed by authorised senior personnel and require formal approval.
How long is footage stored?
Footage is normally stored for up to seven days. It is only kept longer if it is needed as evidence for an incident investigation.
How is the data protected?
All data is handled in accordance with GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The system operates on a secure, closed network protected by firewalls and multi-level password security. If footage needs to be retained for an investigation, it is stored securely on encrypted devices and accessed only by authorised senior colleagues.
How are customers informed about the system?
Notices are displayed in the centre wherever Assisted Lifeguard Technology is in use. These explain that CCTV and ALT systems are operating in the interest of health and safety.
