Worcester’s sporting best are honoured at the 2017 Worcester Sports Awards presented by long-time supporter Steve Cram CBE

On Thursday 14 September the fourteenth City of Worcester Sport Awards delivered in partnership by Freedom Leisure and Sport Worcester and supported by Worcester City Council, took place at the University of Worcester Arena.

Sixteen categories were hotly contested by Worcester’s prolific sporting talent, with winners announced and presented by Olympian, World Champion and top TV Athletics commentator, Steve Cram MBE, while BBC Midlands Today sports presenter and reporter Dan Pallet hosted the event.

Ivan Horsfall-Turner, Managing Director of Freedom Leisure, said: “The awards as always were a truly humbling night and Freedom Leisure is proud to be the host because the event brings together the city’s sporting elite and allow us to honour the best, which in turn garners a great sporting legacy in the area.

“As operator on behalf of Worcester City Council of the city’s three public leisure centres, plus the provider of a hugely successful Active Communities Team, we are here to serve local communities and to enable them to participate in health and fitness activities as much as possible, so these awards are hugely important to us. This year we were honoured to be joined by Olympic legend Steve Cram and we thank him for his support. I’d also like to thank the headline sponsor Heart of Worcestershire College who ensured it was another wonderful event.”

Matthew Rogers, Freedom Leisure Active Communities Manager, adds: “These awards are a celebration of the City’s sporting talent in grass roots sport and we really like the fact it honours locals who have been nominated by locals. But we want to do more than just recognise local sporting heroes, we also want to help support them to achieve their goals – it is for this reason we also offer grants with the latest round open now for applications.”

Councillor Mike Johnson, Chair of Worcester City Council’s Communities Committee, said: “We’re proud to support these fantastic awards, which celebrate the grass roots community heroes who help make Worcester the healthy and active city it is.”
