Nene Centre new children’s climbing facility now open

The Nene Centre, which is operated by us on behalf of East Northamptonshire Council, has undergone the first phase of refurbishment works with the installation of a 6-metre high children’s climbing wall, which opened to the public on Monday 24 July.

Freedom Leisure, which commence operations of three centres in east Northants on 1 April, are kicking off a schedule of improvements across all three centres in with this first project seeing £32k invested.

The climbing wall will be available for casual climbing sessions, group and party bookings and for school use, and is the only climbing wall in East Northamptonshire.

This 7 top-rope climbing wall with four auto belays can have 16 or more different climbing routes at any one time, with the option to reset the routes at regular intervals to keep the experience fresh and challenge climbers.

Chris Tye, Freedom Leisure Area Manager, says: “The team at the centre are very excited to finally be able to open the wall up to local children as it has been completed for a few weeks, but of course we needed to complete full training before we could launch. Now this has been done we can get started with teaching kids how to climb, which is the reason for this investment – Freedom Leisure is more than just a leisure centre operator, we are dedicated to engendering active communities, and this exciting new facility should appeal to many youngsters.”

Steven North, Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, added: “We’re very excited to see the improvements to our centres being rolled out and are confident that this climbing wall will be enjoyed by many children who have perhaps never tried this sport before. We’re working closely with freedom leisure to encourage healthy and active lifestyles for all of our residents and look forward to announcing further centre improvements and new initiatives for all ages to enjoy.”
