Llanidloes Sport Centre new gym formally opened by David Higgins

March 2 2017

On Thursday 2 March, Llanidloes Sport Centre formally launched its new gym after a £36,000 investment by us, with local rally driver and regular centre user, David Higgins, cutting the ribbon in the presence of councillors and local dignitaries.

Higgins is a full member of the centre, regularly using both the gym and partaking in the fitness classes on offer as part of his fitness training. While his children also use the centre often, including being part of the popular and successful swim school.

We operate the centre on behalf of Powys County Council and have committed to the refurbishment upon winning the back in 2015, in order to ensure the centre meets the needs of the local community.

The refurb, which was completed just before Christmas, saw the gym area receive new flooring and the addition of air conditioning, while the area was extended in order to provide a far better functional training area.

New equipment was also added, including state-of-the-art cardiovascular TechnoGym kit.

Cllr Graham Brown, Powys County Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Commissioning, said: “I am delighted that Powys County Council, in partnership with Freedom Leisure, are continuing to invest in facilities throughout the county and I am sure their commitment is very much appreciated by service users from Llanidloes and the surrounding area. The company’s investment in Powys clearly demonstrates the county council’s wisdom in partnering with a not-for-profit organisation.”

Theresa Lloyd, Freedom Leisure Centre Manager, said: “We are very proud of the new gym facility as it now has all the latest equipment required for a total body workout. The new gym has something for everyone in the local community, whatever their fitness level and ability, so from beginners, to advanced gym users, we urge locals to pop in and have a look at this wonderful new space.”

Lloyd adds: “We were absolutely delighted that David could join us for the launch and agreed to open the facility, as a local sportsman he is an inspiration to many youngsters and a good example of how the provision of good quality local leisure facilities can support those pursuing a sporting career.”

In 2011 Higgins joined Subaru Rally Team USA in the Rally America series and won the title, with three wins from his first six events, setting a new record at the same time! He has won the rally America championship eight times in total, in 2002, 2003, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

We are very proud of the new gym facility as it now has all the latest equipment required for a total body workout. The new gym has something for everyone in the local community, whatever their fitness level and ability, so from beginners, to advanced gym users, we urge locals to pop in and have a look at this wonderful new space.
