On Wednesday 1 November, Councillor Roger Sterry, the Mayor of Cinderford and Councillor Jane Horne, Chairman of Forest of Dean Council, formally cut the ribbon at the centre to mark the official opening of its newly improved facilities which were completed at the end of October.
We were awarded the management contract for Forest Fitness back in April and is now managing it on behalf of the Trustees. Forest of Dean District Council has supported the fitness centre’s growth with £200k of investment in the facility and work started back in August to update and improve the huge gym area.
The changes are clear to see from the moment you enter the building, it is bright and modern and packed full of the latest cardiovascular equipment along with a huge range of free weights and resistance kit –one of the many highlights is the highly sought after Skillmill™, a machine which allows users enjoy the most engaging all-round experience of athletic performance training and is used by many celebrity trainers for clients of all abilities to improve power, speed, stamina and agility.
Also new to the gym is a modular function rig, a 10m carpet track with tyre flip and sled pull, and an Olympic weight lifting platform; to name just a few items of kit that aren’t found at your everyday gym – meaning customers at Forest Fitness can experience training in many new, varied and current ways!
As well as the brand new 14-bike indoor cycling studio the gym floor boasts two Life Fitness IC5 Spinning Bikes with Myride consoles, the very latest state-of-the-art virtual cycling experience – and Forest Fitness is the only gym in Gloucestershire to have them!
The opening was to formally mark the completion of work and hand the facilities over to the public, and we were delighted to have had so many council members join us for the occasion. We are extremely proud of the new facilities and as the biggest gym in the area packed full of new kit we are now able to rival the best private gyms!Dave Spencer, Freedom Leisure Area Manager
Finally, the team will be launching a new class timetable to also include some virtual instructor led classes (which means that customers can take a class at a time which suits them, even if there isn’t one on the timetable), increasing the current offering of nine classes per week to 48.
Dave Spencer, Freedom Leisure Area Manager, says: “The opening was to formally mark the completion of work and hand the facilities over to the public, and we were delighted to have had so many council members join us for the occasion. We are extremely proud of the new facilities and as the biggest gym in the area packed full of new kit we are now able to rival the best private gyms! Most importantly, members have already reported to us how happy they are with the enhanced facilities and offerings – which is excellent, and since 1 April we have seen a 1400% increase in membership which is wonderful.
“We’d like to thank Forest of Dean District Council for sharing our vision and investing in this centre. Freedom Leisure is proud to deliver high quality, locally-focussed services and is committed to their ongoing development in support of the objectives we share with our partners – to enable active communities. We are looking forward to welcoming many new members who we are sure will be attracted by the first rate facilities we now have here!”
Councillor Alan Grant, Cabinet Member for Health and Well-Being added: “The district council’s £200,000 investment in Forest Fitness has seen an already hugely popular gym upgraded to a modern, high standard fitness facility for Freedom Leisure members to enjoy.”
After the formal ribbon cutting took place guests toured the new facilities and were given demos of the new equipment.
