Brecon Leisure Centre formal opening of new gym by centre member Rob Davies MBE and Welsh International Dan Lydiate.

official opening

We were delighted to open the new gym at Brecon Leisure centre, with the attendance of council members and Brecon born, table tennis Paralympian, Rob Davies MBE and International Welsh Rugby player Dan Lydiate

The new gym, which was completed on New Year’s Eve, was officially opened by both Davies, who regularly trains at the centre – when he isn’t being honoured at the palace with an MBE, winning gold medals in Rio and defending his status as world champion and Lydiate, who grew up locally and used the centre when he was a child.

Brecon Leisure Centre is undergoing a £485k refurbishment, with the new gym just the first part of the wider project to upgrade the facility as part of Freedom Leisure’s and Powys County Councils commitment to providing excellent health and fitness facilities for the whole community.

I am delighted that Powys County Council in partnership with Freedom Leisure are continuing to invest in facilities throughout the county and I am sure their commitment is very much appreciated by service users from Brecon and the surrounding area. The company’s investment in Powys clearly demonstrates the county council’s wisdom in partnering with a not-for-profit organisation.

The brand new gym is greatly expanded and relocated to the former ten pin bowling area, now much bigger it is fitted out with all the latest state-of-the-art equipment and has been designed to meet with current Disability Discrimination Act regulations and includes provision of new inclusive fitness equipment that is Inclusive Fitness Initiative recognised, so everybody can benefit from the refurbishment.

The second phase of the project, to convert the old gym into a fitness studio is now underway and will enable the very latest group exercise classes to run from the centre.

Richard Gealy, Freedom Leisure Centre Assistant Manager, said: “This is an important and popular community facility and we are pleased that we now have a modern gym for local residents to use. We are absolutely delighted that Rob and Dan joined us along with council members and local dignitaries to be part of the opening, as Rob is a member and regularly trains at the centre, while Dan grew up locally and is a good example of why these types of facilities are important for children.”
