Our well established swim academy runs six days per week and teaches over 4000 children and adults to swim across our five Health and Leisure centres. Our instructors are highly trained and qualified and follow lessons as structured by Swim England. The Swim England Learn to Swim Programme is the leading national teaching syllabus for delivering safe, inclusive and effective swimming lessons for all ages.

stages explained

Main stages

Aquababes 

An instructor lead adult and child session designed to help your little one become confident and comfortable in the water. A parent or carer needs to be in the water for the whole session.

Beginner (3yrs+)

Non swimmers developing basic safety awareness, movement and water confident skills. Swimmers may be required to wear fixed aids and use a variety of swimming aids.

Stage 1 (4yrs+ attending school)

Non swimmers developing basic safety awareness, movement and water confident skills. Swimmers may be required to wear fixed aids and use a variety of swimming aids.

Novice (7yrs+)

Non or weak swimmers developing basic safety awareness, movement and water confident skills. Swimmers may be required to wear fixed aids and use a variety of swimming aids. Covers Stages 1 & 2.

Stage 2

Required to swim at least 5m on Front & Back without aids. Developing safe entries, including jumping in, floating, travelling including rotation. A variety of swimming aids will be used.

Stage 3

Required to swim at least 10m on Front & Back and are also deep end confident. Developing submersion, rotation and stroke introduction.

Stage 4

Required to swim at least 25m on Front & Back with over arm recovery and have Breaststroke knowledge. Developing an understanding of buoyancy, refining kicking technique for all strokes, including Butterfly.

Stage 5

Required to swim at least 25m of Front Crawl & Back Crawl along with at least 10m of Breaststroke. Developing stamina and distance in the three main strokes and perfecting Butterfly.

Stage 6

Required to swim at least 50m of Front Crawl & Back Crawl along with at least 25m of Breaststroke & 10m of Butterfly. Developing stamina and distance in the three main strokes and perfecting Butterfly.  Introducing Personal Survival and exercise preparation.

Stage 7

Required to swim at least 50m of Front Crawl, Back Crawl & Breaststroke with at least 25m of Butterfly. Developing quality stroke technique. Incorporating a variety of skills to complete an obstacle course.  Introducing Diving.


Post Stage 7 Options (Not available at all centres)

Competitive

Available at Applemore, Lymington, New Milton, Ringwood & Totton.
Lane swimming with distance drills and progressive learning for starts, turns and tumble turns. Covers Stage 8, 9 & 10.

Swim Fit

Available at Applemore, Lymington, New Milton & Ringwood.
Lane swimming with distance drills using timing elements and stamina and strength building.

Rookies 

Available at Applemore, Lymington, New Milton, Ringwood & Totton.
Start with Bronze and progress to Silver and Gold. Involves water safety, swimming in clothes, timed swims, rescues, resuscitation.


Post Rookies (Not available at all centres)

Survive & Save

Available at Applemore, Lymington, Ringwood & Totton.
For 12years+. Arranged into Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. The awards teach lifesaving rescue, self-rescue, survival, lifesaving sport skills and develop swimming ability and fitness.
