Woking Borough Council is committed to supporting opportunities for the community to participate in sport and active lifestyles, to help improve the physical and mental health and wellbeing and quality of life for people in Woking. The partnership between Woking Borough Council and Freedom Leisure enhances this by supporting more people in Woking to be more active more often.Emma-Louise Webb - Woking Borough Council, Sports Development Officer
In Woking, we develop a wide range of sporting programmes, working with the Active Surrey, local clubs, National Governing Bodies of Sport and the English Federation of Disability Sport. In Woking we sponsor the Woking Sport Awards and Specsavers Surrey Youth Games to recognise local talent. We also support local athletes with our Talented Athlete Scheme to help them with their training.
Active Young People
We work with children, young people and families across Woking of all ages and abilities to encourage them into a more active habit for life. We have a range of holiday activities including the Junior Summer Fitness Challenge, school activity programmes, learn to swim opportunities, youth programmes and more.
We encourage all people in Woking, regardless of ability to age well. We host and lead a range of programmes such as Walking Football, Walking Netball, Walking Basketball, Swim Buddies and Dementia friendly swimming to encourage those aged 60+ to have fun, socialise and focus on improving mental and physical wellbeing. We are committed to improving opportunities for those facing dementia to remain active.
Across Woking we work with over 20 community groups and organisations to develop even more opportunities for local people to get involved in fun activities. We support events, deliver activities, host competitions and training, set up specific community-led programmes to help in making the most of where people live. Our active community’s facebook page is where you will find us next!
We want to get all people more active, including those who find their working life in Woking a reason for not being as active as they may want. As ‘sitting is the new smoking’, we want to work with more local businesses to find out what their employees would love to do with us to get more active around their job. We work with Woking College and local sixth forms to provide opportunities to volunteer with our teams.
Health and physical activity come hand in hand and we know the importance of preventing health issues later in life. We support and host local health programmes including; GP Referral, cardiac rehab, health referral, stroke rehab, pulmonary rehab and singing for health. Our staff across local facilities are trained to encourage everyone who wants to improve their health into an opportunity for them.
