About half of Freedom Leisure’s sites have swimming pools, which means we look after the safety of thousands of swimmers in the water every week.
We achieve this by employing a lot of Lifeguards, all of whom need training to become qualified, need on-going training every month to maintain their competence and then need to re-qualify after two years. As you can imagine, Lifeguard training is something we have a lot of experience in delivering.
Becoming a Lifeguard is a great way to get into working in leisure. Leisure centres with swimming pools need to employ many Lifeguards, and there is often some turnover as many staff work as a Lifeguard on a part time or casual basis before going off to do something else.
At Freedom Leisure Training we deliver the RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, which is a five day intensive course followed by an external assessment, required to supervise a pool used for open public swimming.
We also run the RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches which will qualify swimming teachers and aquatic coaches as Lifesavers to supervise their students in the absence of a fully qualified Lifeguard. The Rescue Award is a two day course followed by an external assessment.
After starting as a receptionist in a leisure centre I was looking for a career path and could see that becoming a lifeguard was a great starting point. Over a number of years of working hard i was able to process through the management structure, which in turn gave me great opportunities to learn more skills. I had really enjoyed my first RLSS National Pool Lifeguard course and thought I would love to teach people, those lifesaving skills. This was the start of a new career path for me into training, initially as part of my job within the leisure centre, but now as full time trainer for multiple centres and members of the public. I find it very rewarding teaching people skills that will save someone’s life. Becoming a lifeguard is a fantastic first job or as a starting point, if your seeking a career in leisure industry, it will give you skills for life.Paul Abbie, NPLQ Tutor
