This course is designed for anybody who wishes to progress their career in fitness, health and wellbeing and active leisure. The course aims to teach you how design and implement programmes safely and effectively for clients who have been referred, usually because they are suffering with some medical condition.

While we offer open course dates for this training, if you have a number of staff who need to attend it may be more cost effective to book a on-site course, on days and at times that suit you.

To deliver this 5 day course anywhere in Sussex, for a maximum of 16 people, the price is £470 (VAT not applicable).  Additional costs may be added for courses run outside Sussex or run over more than 5 days.

The cost is fully inclusive of trainer, manuals, assessment and certificates, but does not include venue hire or refreshments. Please note that the venue must be suitable for the course (please contact us for our advice if you are uncertain).

Syllabus and Pre requisites

The syllabus for this course includes:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health (Level 3, 6 credits) - covered with e-learning
  • Professional Practice for Exercise Referral Instructors (Level 3, 2 credits) 
  • Understanding Medical Conditions for Exercise Referral (Level 4, 7 credits)
  • Applying the principles of nutrition and physical activity (Level 3, 6 credits) - covered with e-learning
  • Planning Exercise Referral Programmes with Patients (Level 3, 8 credits)
  • Instructing Exercise with Referred Patients (Level 3, 9 credits)

You must hold either a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (which includes Gym, Exercise to Music or Aqua) or one of the following:

  • Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
  • Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork
  • Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga.

Other qualifications which may also be accepted must be equivalent to the above such as ones which give entry to REPs Physical Activity Advisor category.

You will be assessed by the tutor through the completion of worksheets and practical application of what you have learnt, and you will complete a theory paper that is assessed externally.

This qualification carries 38 REPs points and will provide learners with entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3 and from there learners are able to progress onto other courses such as:

  • Active IQ Level 4 Certificate in Exercise for the Management of Lower Back Pain (QCF)
  • Active IQ Level 4 Certificate in Exercise and Nutritional Interventions for Obesity and Diabetes (QCF)
£470 per person for those with a valid Level 3, £690 for those who hold a valid level 2 qualification
