Hailsham Leisure Centre has won ‘Best Rehabilitation Facility of the Year’ in the 2016 National Fitness Awards, announced at a glittering awards ceremony on Friday 2 December – a particularly special achievement as it is the second year running that Hailsham Leisure Centre has won the category!
The local community leisure centre has run a wide range of rehabilitation sessions for people recovering from stroke, cancer and heart disease and overcoming obesity for over ten years, with the rehab team now seeing over 300 people each week, more than doubling its intake of GP referral patients in 2016.
Freedom Leisure’s specialist rehab team works closely with local hospital trusts and charities to fulfil rehabilitation and care programmes for patients on their behalf and aside from stroke, cancer and heart disease, Hailsham Leisure Centre now also runs specialist services for; falls prevention and mental health, also recently introducing a range of services for people with dementia – with the entire centre workforce recently undergoing training to ensure people with dementia are welcomed and understood there.
Nicole White, Freedom Leisure Centre Manager says: "It’s really amazing to win this award two years in a row; it will mean so much to our members and will enable us to grow the programme further and help even more people in the local community.
“The team works tirelessly to deliver on our rehabilitation promises and offering these innovative services in a local community leisure centre means that they are accessible to all, allowing members to complete their rehabilitation in a local, friendly, supportive and social setting, where they feel welcome and relaxed.”
White continues: “This National Fitness Award is for everyone at Hailsham Leisure Centre and I would like to thank all my colleagues for their continued hard work and dedication.”
Nicole was joined at the awards ceremony by GP Referral Co-Ordinator Stephanie Wadlow and Fitness Manager Beverley Whitney, who together lead the rehabilitation programmes at Hailsham Leisure Centre. “Freedom Leisure’s pioneering approach to rehabilitation over the years has meant that many more people in our community have been able to access specialist programmes – which is the reason we do it! Says Wadlow. “The progress of our members is rewarding in itself, however, to have our work recognised with a National Fitness Award is tremendous and testament to the joint efforts of our health partners, leisure team and wonderful clients.”
“Freedom Leisure is setting down a marker across the whole country as to what can be achieved through integrating rehabilitation with leisure and fitness in the community,” said Councillor Claire Dowling, Cabinet member for Public Health and Community Safety at Wealden District Council. “To win this award two years running shows what a tremendous contribution is being made through a joined up approach to after care in Wealden.”
