Freedom Leisure is all set to reopen GL1 & Oxstalls Indoor Tennis Centre in Gloucester this Saturday [11/11/23].
Following the announcement by Gloucester City Council that Freedom Leisure will manage the leisure facilities in Gloucester, the leisure trust has pulled out all the stops to recruit and retrain as many of the existing staff as possible to reopen the leisure centres at GL1 and Oxstalls in record time.
Normally, the mobilisation of a new contract would be months, Freedom Leisure has managed to turn it around in days with the partial reopening of GL1 and Oxstalls following a very successful ‘Recruitment Day’ where ex-employees of Aspire Sports Trust congregated at Oxstalls Indoor Tennis Centre with a view to seeking re-employment.
Freedom Leisure can confirm that from Saturday 11th November, they will welcome visitors to the swimming pool, the sports hall for badminton and indoor sports and group exercise classes including Zumba and Yoga at GL1 and tennis and outdoor pitch hire at Oxstalls. All these activities will be on a pay-as-you-go basis with card payments only over the weekend.
For more information and to view the specific opening hours and initial timetables for the next few days, please visit GL1’s website at https://www.freedom-leisure.co.uk/gl1 and Oxstalls’ website at https://www.freedom-leisure.co.uk/oxstalls
I am personally so pleased to be reopening the leisure facilities in Gloucester with Freedom Leisure. It was a devastating time for all the employees and to the community that the venues had to close. I am excited and confident that with the support of Freedom Leisure, these facilities will thrive once more and I’d encourage as many of our users to return to support their local community leisure facilities. It is very gratifying that we have been able to re-employ nearly 80 ex-Aspire employees so far with more to follow as we reopen more facilities in the coming days and weeks.

It’s fantastic news that more of the facilities will be opening this weekend, thanks to the extra hard work of the Freedom Leisure team with the support of the city council. We’re also delighted that many former staff have been employed and that the future of the facilities is now in safe hands. We are very pleased to be working with Freedom Leisure.
Cllr. Andy Lewis
