Happy 15th Birthday Freedom Leisure

fifteen years at the heart of our communities

April 1 2017

The 1 April 2017 marks our 15th Birthday. It is fifteen years since the trust was formed in 2002 to operate four leisure centres on behalf of Wealden District Council.

Freedom Leisure is a not-for-profit, independent provident society with charitable status. This means that financial surpluses over and above operating costs are directly reinvested into facilities and services to improve local community leisure centres. We were set up with the sole purpose of providing a cost effective way of operating leisure facilities on behalf of Local Authorities, while ensuring a quality service for their communities.

Since that day fifteen years ago, we have grown considerably and taken on additional partnerships across England and Wales, now operating 75 centres on behalf of 16 Local Authorities! In the last two years we’ve enjoyed significant expansion, increasing our number of Local Authority partnerships by six and the number of centres from 41 to 72 – in regions such as Wrexham, Powys the Forest of Dean and Arun.

We are extremely proud of how far we have come in our first fifteen years! Building a solid foundation and making huge waves in the leisure industry with impressive expansion. The communities in which we serve are at the heart of everything we do and we are pleased that our facilities sit in the heart of the communities in return. It is our aim to allow people to be more active more often and with over sixty thousand members and 11 million centre visitors last year, we hope we are going some way to achieving this

fifteen years at the heart of our communities

Our business model has led to considerable investment and transformed many of the facilities beyond recognition, something we are very proud of!

We have also gain a reputation as a high quality operator, focused on bespoke delivery within each and every one of the communities in which we work, with an emphasis on service as well as facilities. One of our most important roles is facilitating and encouraging active communities. We do this with community-focused, sport development teams both centrally and regionally located, who work to engage the less active members of a community.

Fifteen years to the day of starting, on the 1st April 2017 we commence our latest contract in East Northamptonshire, acquiring three new centres, which is rather a nice way to mark the anniversary.
