Double Olympic High Jumper Visit to Friday Night Project on 13 February

Double Olympic High Jumper Visit to Friday Night Project on 13 February

We were delighted to welcome Olympian, Brendan Reilly and his son Arthur, at de Stafford’s Friday Night Project on 13th February

Brendan is a Double Olympian who competed in Sydney and Barcelona and represented and captained GB at countless World and European competitions over a ten year period.

He won medals and broke records at all levels of competition, from National to World Cup level. He was 5 x English Schools Champion, World Record Holder for 15 year olds (2m12cm), 5 x British Senior Champion, European and World Schools Champion with a Personal Best of jump 2m 32cm.

Brendans son, Arthur is currently the National u20’s Pole Vault Champion jumping 4.75m (The height of a double decker bus) and also the Decathlon (multi events) U20’s National Champion winning this last month! He is now trying to use all these skills, alongside starting drama college in September to try and achieve his ultimate goal of competing in the Olympics and then becoming a Stuntman in Hollywood.

They both spoke about journeys into competitive sport, through serious injuries and in Brendan’s case coming from a challenging background to competing in the Olympics. Both were articulate, engaging and inspiring. Brendan’s and Arthurs messages are so important to inspire our young people to try something new and see where it takes you. One of our young people later commented on Arthurs solutions to dealing with injuries, which in his case was playing the piano. The fact that they were quoting him later in the night really showed that this was a powerful takeaway message for them to understand resilience and coping strategies from a young role model.

Their presentation was followed by an amazing taster session of the high jump with some amazing jumps and a special highlight was watching one of our 11 year old girls try something new and scissor kick herself over 1m 30 cm which is close to 3rd in the country based on the rankings of a 13 year old!!

This presentation should be included on the National curriculum! We're hoping to have both Brendan and Arthur back to FNP in the near future.
