"Swimming keeps me going mentally.”
Carole has swum since childhood, alongside her late husband Roy, mastering the sea’s depths. After his passing and her stroke, swimming became a source of peace and healing. On Roy’s 87th birthday, she swam 40 laps in his honor, a testament to the power of swimming in her life.
HOW CAROLE STAYS ACTIVE
Carole’s love for swimming began at Hastings Seaside at the age of 7, and she continued her aquatic journey when she moved to Ashford in 2001, choosing the Stour Centre as her local swimming destination.
Despite dealing with ongoing aches and pains, Carole perseveres in the water. She believes swimming keeps her body and mind strong, helping her manage health conditions and maintain her independence.
Beyond fitness, swimming offers Carole emotional healing, especially when surrounded by families during Sunday morning sessions. For Carole, being a member of the Stour Centre is about connecting with a community and finding fulfillment, just as her husband did when he taught a blind boy to swim.
Swimming isn’t just a physical activity for Carole. It’s a cherished part of her life, offering healing, connection, and peace.
CAROLE'S POEM
When I was 7 and learning new things I learned to swim in the sea at Hastings. I wasn't alone as Dad stood nearby, he wouldn't come in as he couldn't swim.
All through my life I have never stopped swimming, often alone as others didn't share my passion, preferring to shop and look at the fashions.
When I was 18 a young man called Roy came into my life and we shared many ideas especially swimming and lots of events.
I'm now alone without the love of my life and my ancient old body causes me lots of strife.
A few years ago I discovered the Stour and using the pool helps me regain power.
To enable my body and mind to heal and repair
So when feel I fragile or just a bit sad. I'm off to the Stour to help me be glad that I always enjoy swimming and think about Roy.
I've met a few others who share my obsession to swim for a session and have a quick chat.
I like watching families all having fun and lifeguards watch over us to ensure we walk and don't run!
So out with swimwear, in the water you go. Watch how we swim even if a bit slow.
A special way to spend an hour is joining life at the Stour.
