When and why did you become a swimming teacher ?

I qualified as a Swimming teacher in 2000. I've always had an interest in swimming and was a competitive swimmer when I was younger. When the opportunity arouse to qualify I jumped at the chance as I believed I could pass on the knowledge, enjoyment and enthusiasm to others. I also believe that it is a safety skill that we should encourage as we are a country that is surrounded by water. Being able to swim can lead on to many other water based opportunities such as surfing and water skiing.

What is your favourite stage to teach and why?

I really enjoy teaching stage 3 as I am preparing children to take the next step into the deeper water. My favourite stages are 8, 9 and 10 as these are the competitive swimming stages.

What is your favourite part of teaching swimming lessons?

Seeing children achieve something that they didn't believe they could do.

When I was younger I was a club swimmer and my dream was to be an Olympic Swimmer, my dream now is to see someone I've taught become an Olympic Swimmer.

What's a fun fact about you that people may not know?

I love to bake and make edible goodies.

My name is Anna and I became a swimming teacher in 2018.

My colleagues Elaine and Karen were my inspiration behind training for a new career after leaving the classroom to become a mother of two boys.  I swam as a child so it was a natural move to combine swimming with teaching.

My favourite stage to teach is 8 because all the basic swimming strokes are complete. Only the odd 'tweak' is required and the children get to learn my favourite skill of 'tumble turns'. Tumble turns are really fun to teach as they look very professional!

My favourite part of teaching swimming is seeing the pure joy of children who work hard when they are learning to swim and the smile on their face when they receive the 'Congratulations' certificate.  The parents are also fascinating to watch as their smiles are just as large!

Fascinating fact about Anna: When I am not teaching swimming - I am usually found on the golf course....my handicap is 6.
