Pilates classes in Brighton
Pilates is a fun, low impact exercise that focuses on building core strength. Here at Withdean, we offer a range of pilates classes throughout the week to suit all abilities. For a gentler form of pilates, why not try our calming and balancing mat-based workout, which focuses on slow and measured movements in order to develop and maintain lean and strong muscles. It may be gentle, but it’s also highly effective for improving posture, flexibility and preventing injuries.
Fitness pilates Brighton
Want to try a more challenging form of pilates? Fitness Pilates incorporates simultaneous stretching and strengthening moves, focusing on strengthening core muscles with the use of body weight, bands and hand weights.
Fitness classes including pilates
Alongside our core pilates sessions, we offer holistic classes which incorporate elements of pilates with other low impact exercises, such as yoga.
Body Balance
If you like variety, why not try Body Balance which incorporates elements of yoga, pilates and tai chi. This holistic workout will build flexibility and strength while leaving you feeling centred and calm and bring your body into a state of harmony and balance.
Supple Strength
A blend of pilates, yoga and stretch to strengthen your abdominals, back and bum while firming and shaping your legs and arms. By using your own body weight as resistance, you will engage several muscle groups at one time, strengthening one set while stretching another.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long have you got? Pilates is first and foremost a core-strengthening exercise. Building core strength is a key factor in reducing back and hip pain, and decreasing pelvic floor dysfunction. It helps to improve posture and body alignment, reduces risk of injury, helps to repair diastasis recti after pregnancy, aids natural sleep and boosts mental health.
If you’re a beginner and haven’t attended a pilates class before, don’t worry. Our friendly instructors will let you know what to expect and discuss any recent or existing injuries you might have. Your first class will start with some simple breathing exercises accompanied with some gentle stretching moves to help loosen your muscles. After that, you can expect most classes to focus on small, controlled low impact exercises that align, tone and strengthen the muscles in order to build a more balanced body.
People attending the classes bring their own mat, however mats are available at Withdean should you forget to bring your own.
It is very important you are comfortable while doing pilates. For your bottom half, wear leggings or joggers that are not too baggy. Your teacher will need to check your body alignment while exercising. Shoes or trainers are not required in a pilates studio - just non slip socks or bare feet. T-shirts are fine but they should not be too baggy as some exercises involve lying on your front raising your upper body. Ladies are advised to wear a sports bra. Long hair should be tied back and remove any dangling jewellery.
Here at Withdean, we have some fantastic membership packages available. This includes Unlimited membership which will give you access to all seven Freedom Leisure sites across Brighton and Hove. We also have exclusive membership options for key workers. Check out our Membership page for more information.
While both yoga and pilates are low impact exercises which focus on breathing and flexibility, there are some differences between the two. Yoga concentrates more on flexibility and strength of the whole body whereas pilates focuses more on strength and control of movement, with an aim to build abdominal core / pelvic floor muscles.
