What is Health Referral?
Health Referral is a process initiated by a medical professional’s recommendation or referral. It involves supervised exercise under a qualified exercise professional’s guidance to improve an existing medical condition.
Exercise referral is not just about immediate health improvements. It’s a long-term strategy that promotes regular, appropriate physical activity to improve health and well-being. It’s about encouraging habitual participation for sustained benefits.
Conditions that are referred
We can facilitate Health Referrals for many different
reasons. Here are a few examples:
- Chronic medical conditions, such as heart conditions
- Diabetes
- Joint or muscle conditions (Arthritis, Osteoporosis)
- Mental health
- A BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 25
- Wishing and willing to return to exercise after injury or illness
- And many more...
After being referred, what do I do next?
If you are referred to the programme, you will be given a referral form from your healthcare professional, which you must bring to your first appointment with your exercise referral consultant. Email us your contact details at [email protected], and we will book you for your first appointment.
Appointments
Appointment 1: The consultation
We’ll review your referral form for health screening and make sure you’re suitable for the scheme. We’ll then talk about what you want and need from it, and answer any questions or concerns you might have. Your details and referral will be kept confidentially on file, and you’ll then be booked in for your induction session.
Appointment 2: The induction session (1 hour)
Based on the information you provide during your consultation, your referral consultant will create an individual exercise programme tailored to your needs and abilities. Your exercises will be recorded on a programme card for you to keep.
What next
From now on, you can usually attend the gym during opening hours. For the next three months, you’ll be able to use the gym and take part in the wellness classes that are suitable for you. You should book a reassessment with your referral consultant at least once a month so they can review your progress and update your programme. It’s your responsibility to follow your exercise programme and let your referral consultant know about any changes to your health.

We offer referrals at a discounted rate for the first 12 weeks to make the scheme as accessible as possible and minimise cost as a barrier to exercise.
Our 12-week Health Referral Scheme costs £100 for the full 12 weeks, with a £10 initial deposit paid when booking the first appointment (this is then deducted from the £100 on full sign-up).
