The benefits of Pilates
Pilates focuses on controlled, precise movements to improve flexibility, core strength, posture and overall fitness. These movements are designed to increase range of motion and promote proper alignment, helping to reduce pain and discomfort in the body. Pilates also focuses on building a strong core, which is essential for maintaining proper posture and supporting the spine. Additionally, it is a mindful form of exercise which can help to reduce stress and improve overall mental wellbeing. Finally, it is a low-impact form of exercise that is easy on the joints, making it an accessible form of exercise for people of all ages.

During a Pilates class, it is essential to ensure you are comfortable and your movement is not restricted by your clothing. For your lower body, wear fitted leggings or joggers as your teacher will need to check your body alignment during exercises. Shoes are not necessary in a Pilates studio, and we would recommend you wear non-slip socks or go barefoot. T-shirts are appropriate, but baggy tops should be avoided as some exercises involve lying on your front and raising your upper body. Women are advised to wear a sports bra. Long hair should be tied back, and any dangling jewellery should be removed.
If you have your own Pilates mat, we would advise bringing this along with you, however we do have mats available at Marina Centre if you forget to bring yours.
While both Pilates and yoga are low impact exercises that focus on breathing and flexibility, there are distinctions between the two. Yoga places a greater emphasis on overall body flexibility and strength, while Pilates focuses on strength and control of movement with the goal of building abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.
