Active Lifestyles

what is active lifestyles?

Active Lifestyles is an activity referral programme for sedentary patients with recognised medical conditions.  Active Lifestyles also offers condition specific sessions, such as Cardiac Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation (COPD) and Falls Prevention alongside individual programmes for a range of other medical conditions.

Referred clients are offered specific individual programmes designed by fully qualified Active Lifestyles Advisors, following a full health assessment. The programme offers unlimited sessions of activity over 12 weeks.

We also deliver a Cancer Rehabilitation scheme as part of our 12 week Active Lifestyles programme and we have Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation qualified Active Lifestyle advisors available at each of our sites to support you.

To book your initial appointment please pop in to your local Health and Leisure centre and visit reception or call our customer advisers on 023 8200 0299.

How much does it cost?

The scheme is supported by New Forest District Council and prices are subsidised.

One off charge for all assessments / inductions £10.00
Pay as you go / unlimited session £3.60
Active Lifestyles package - unlimited sessions  £72.00

What conditions can be helped?

Activity can play a key role in assisting postoperative recovery, mobility, insomnia, back pain and weight loss, as well as improving self-esteem and fitness. In addition, research has proven that regular activity can improve a broad range of physical and psychological medical conditions including amongst others: Angina, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, hypertension, asthma, anxiety and depression.

What activity is available on the scheme?

Gym, swim (sauna and steam room not included), classes as deemed appropriate by your Active Lifestyle advisor.

When would I need to attend?

For high risk patients, or patients that need more one to one assistance, we have specific sessions throughout the week to ensure that you are supported - however the majority of patients referred to us are able to use the centre at any time, so that you can participate in the scheme when it is convenient to you.

How do I get referred?

A local GP, practice nurse, consultant or other medical professional will be able to refer you. The 'Referral Form' they use gives details of any medical problems that you may have so that the Active Lifestyle advisor can take these in to account while they support you through the scheme. We accept referrals 6 months from the date of issue.

Is there a waiting list to be seen?

You do need to make an appointment for your first assessment but a suitable day and time is usually found within 14 days.

What happens when I have finished the scheme?

We are able to offer you a three month membership, again at a reduced rate for just £30 per month (a saving of £15 a month)  which can be purchased monthly or as a singly payment. You will also be able to continue using the centre at a discounted rate for a further twelve weeks.

I'm currently not very fit, will I feel out of place in the gym?

No, our gyms are used by normal people, just like yourself, working to improve their wellbeing. If you are at all unsure, just pop along to your local centre and one of our friendly customer advisors will show you around so that you can see for yourself.

What are the benefits of regular activity?

It's a fact that taking regular exercise dramatically increases your chances of living healthier and longer. The current recommendation for physical activity is 30 minutes of moderate activity (like brisk walking) on five or more days of the week.

Activity can make you feel good, keep your heart strong, give you more energy, reduce blood pressure, help you sleep better, reduce stress and manage your weight.
