While preparatory works and site set-up activity began in September, the event marked the official commencement of the £8 million transformation programme, which will deliver significant improvements to one of Gloucester's most important community facilities.

The extensive refurbishment is expected to continue until autumn 2027 and will create a modern, enhanced leisure destination for residents, members and visitors. The project is being delivered by Gloucester City Council in partnership with Freedom Leisure, acting as an agent, to operate GL1 Leisure Centre on behalf of the Council.

The improvement works are scheduled to take place in two phases. Phase 1 is now underway and includes the development of a brand-new gym and functional fitness spaces, alongside a refreshed women’s-only gym.

Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 and continue through to autumn 2027. This phase will bring some exciting new additions to GL1, with children and families at the heart of the improvements. A brand-new soft play facility, climbing wall and fun new water play features will give families even more reasons to visit and enjoy the centre. Alongside these exciting attractions, customers will also benefit from refurbished changing facilities and a new, modern reception hub, creating a more welcoming experience from the moment they arrive.

GL1 is one of Gloucester's most valued community facilities, and this £8 million investment will ensure it continues to serve residents for years to come. These improvements will create modern, high-quality spaces for fitness, leisure and family activities, while enhancing the experience for everyone who uses the centre. It's great to see work now officially underway and we look forward to bringing these exciting new facilities to Gloucester together with Freedom Leisure.
