The plans will see unused space within the leisure centre transformed into the new gym set to open in Summer 2026. The improvements will include new flooring, upgraded fitness equipment, refreshed décor, air conditioning and enhanced security features.

Inspired by the feedback from our customers, these exciting new plans will see a brand-new women’s gym created, with the original space becoming a dedicated indoor spin room. Freedom Leisure also held three customer meetings at GL1 Leisure Centre to share the exciting developments, which were very well received by those who attended.

"We are committed to being fully inclusive and providing everyone with equal opportunities to get active and improve their wellbeing. This upgraded women’s gym ensures that women in our community have a safe, welcoming space to enjoy fitness on their own terms and it strongly reflects our wider vision of improving lives through leisure.”

Nick Charlton

Freedom Leisure Area Manager

“We’re excited to be able to announce these welcome improvements to the women’s gym facilities. We have heard from users how important it is for women to have a dedicated space, about the barriers they face in exercising, including finding places which feel safe and welcoming. So we’re delighted we were able to find a new area for the women’s gym and introduce significant improvements.”

Councillor Caroline Courtney

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure

“We know that when women feel safe and comfortable in active spaces, they’re far more likely to use them and enjoy being active. In Gloucester, women-only gyms play an important role in opening up opportunities for women who might otherwise feel excluded or miss out on being active altogether. What’s exciting about this project is that it’s been shaped by local women themselves, drawing on different experiences, cultures and needs. By working closely with Freedom Leisure and Gloucester City Council, we’re building on what already works and investing in a space that can support a healthier, happier Gloucester, where more women feel confident, welcome and able to take part.”

The women’s gym at GL1 demonstrates the strength of local partnership working to improve community health and wellbeing.

Freedom Leisure is also continuing to invest in wider improvements across the GL1 facility. Lighting upgrades will be taking place in the pool halls, sports hall and gymnastics hall, helping to enhance the overall customer experience. In addition, Reformer Pilates will be arriving at GL1 in March, with further enhancements planned across the centre throughout 2026.
