Our Swimming Lessons
Stage 1
Introduce and improve the main swimming strokes. Learn new skills such as floating, basic safety awareness, water confidence and swimming underwater.
Stage 2
For stronger beginners who are able to swim 5 metres front crawl and back crawl.
Stage 3
For pupils who can swim a width of the pool (10m) on their front and back. Swimmers will improve their strokes and develop their breathing skills.
Stage 4
Introduces a range of other skills such as sculling, rotation skills and treading water. Swimmers will use the main strokes emphasising the importance of streamlining and breath control.
Stage 5
Develop effective swimming skills including co-ordinated breathing and water safety. Lessons will introduce diving and survival skills.
Bronze Challenge
This class is suitable for children who are capable of swimming at least 25 metres. Pupils will improve their stamina and stroke technique.Pupils will work on the four swimming strokes and improve their breathing techniques.
Silver Challenge
This 45-minute session is for children who are able to swim at least 400 metres competently. Pupils will progress their stamina whilst maintaining their stroke techniques. Pupils will develop a higher level of water skills, including tumble turns.
Gold Challenge
This 45-minute swimming session suitable for competent swimmers who have achieved their silver challenge award and can swim at least 800 metres.
Adult Swimming Lessons
Our adult lessons are designed for pupils aged 16 years and over. If you are a beginner and would like to learn how to swim, or would like to brush up on your strokes, we have a class for you. All classes are taught by qualified instructors who recognise individual needs and will work on them through gentle practise (the instructor will be teaching from poolside).
Wednesday - Beginner 1:30-2pm & Improver 2-2:30pm
We Follow Swim England's Learn To Swim Pathway
We work in partnership with Swim England to deliver a high quality Learn to Swim Programme for all ages and abilities.
All our instructors are experienced and fully trained to deliver the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme and are fully DBS checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most children are ready for swim lessons by the age of 4, at which point they can typically learn basic water survival skills such as floating, treading water and getting to an exit point. By age 5 or 6, they can usually master the front crawl. The important thing to remember is it’s never too late to learn how to swim!
Our lessons are 30 minutes per week
Some children are more naturally competent and confident in the water and therefore will progress faster. Other children are slower to learn but can quite often become stronger and more proficient swimmers as they progress.
The swimming pool at de Stafford Sports Centre is 25 metres long.
Yes, we have a large free carpark available for members and non-members using the centre.
Our swimming lessons take place at de Stafford Sports Centre, Burntwood Lane, Caterham, CR3 5YX. You can also find swimming lessons at our nearby sister site, Tandridge Leisure Centre.
