Powys County Council (PCC) and Freedom Leisure have announced that the development at Builth Wells Sports Centre will start on Monday 4 October.

As part of the works, the weight training room will be made larger to create a bespoke and functional strength area, to accommodate the centre’s growing number of members and customers. And the existing fitness equipment will be replaced with new, fully accessible state-of-the-art Technogym products.

Improvements to the flooring, ceiling and lighting will also be carried out to create a quality facility for exercising in.

Cllr Rachel Powell, PCC’s Portfolio Holder for Young People and Culture, said: “Our sports and leisure centres are highly valued by Powys residents who want to look after their own, and their families’, physical and mental well-being, so providing the best facilities we can to help them achieve this is really important to us.

“The work that is planned should lead to significant improvements at Builth Wells Sports Centre and it looks like it will be a really exciting development that will allow even more people in the area to live active and healthy lifestyles!”

The improvements will also be of benefit to the adjacent high school pupils, studying at Ysgol Calon Cymru’s Builth Campus, who use the facilities during their PE lessons and for extra-curricular sports activities.

Cllr Phyl Davies, PCC’s Portfolio Holder for Education, said: “Having good exercise facilities available to our learners is really important for their physical and mental wellbeing and is part of our ambition to provide the best possible learning environments in all of the county’s schools.”

Gwyn Owen, Area Manager, Freedom Leisure Powys, added: “We are delighted to be progressing with this project which is yet another great example of a true and effective partnership at work. It will deliver a great new gym and functional area for the Builth Wells community and Powys as a whole.”
