At Arun Leisure Centre, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being active in a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment.
We're delighted to share the inspiring story of Millie, a junior gym member whose fitness journey has been transformed with the support of one of our team members, Sue.
When Millie first attended the gym, she felt extremely anxious about taking part. As a neurodiverse young person who can often be non-verbal and finds it difficult to engage in community settings, the experience could easily have felt overwhelming. However, thanks to Sue's patience, understanding and encouragement during her gym induction, Millie quickly began to feel at ease.
Over time, her confidence has continued to grow and she is now able to attend the gym independently, something that seemed a daunting prospect when she first arrived.
My daughter (Millie) is absolutely loving the junior gym.. she had her induction as I said with Sue. Sue is such an asset to the team, she is brilliant with neurodiverse children!! Millie is often nonverbal.. she struggles to go out into the community. Sue had her chatting away happily. I think this picture shows so much more than a gym induction.. it shows compassion, inclusion, empathy and a huge amount of kindness.. for Millie it’s life changing.. the world needs more Sues!!!

Stories like Millie's are a powerful reminder that our leisure centres are about far more than fitness. They're places where people can build confidence, develop new skills and feel supported to achieve goals they may never have thought possible.
We are incredibly proud of Sue and the positive impact she has had on Millie's journey. Her commitment to creating a welcoming environment reflects the values we strive to deliver every day at Arun Leisure Centre.
