Freedom Leisure’s Outswimming Cancer sessions, held every Wednesday at Arc Leisure Matlock, provide a welcoming and supportive environment where participants can improve their swimming skills, maintain physical wellbeing and connect with others who have shared similar experiences. The free instructor-led sessions are designed specifically for people living with, or recovering from, cancer.
Recent feedback from participants highlights the positive impact the programme is having on both physical and mental wellbeing.
David, one of the regular attendees, said the sessions have helped him stay fit and healthy while meeting new people. He explained that the group encourages participants to keep moving forward and continue enjoying life despite the challenges they may have faced.
Another participant, Dave, praised the benefits of exercising in water, particularly for those managing arthritis and other physical conditions. He said the buoyancy of the water reduces pressure on joints and limbs, while the social aspect of the sessions is equally important.
Sue described the programme as “a great facility to have” and stressed the importance of raising awareness so that more people can benefit from the support available.
Meanwhile, Dennis highlighted both the enjoyment and health benefits of the sessions, describing the programme as a valuable asset for the local community.
The sessions take place every Wednesday from 1pm to 2pm at Arc Leisure Matlock, with dedicated pool space and support from an experienced swim teacher. Participants can choose to swim lengths, work on specific skills or simply enjoy spending time in the water and socialising with others.
The feedback from our Outswimming Cancer participants demonstrates just how important community-based physical activity programmes can be. The sessions are about much more than swimming; they provide a supportive space where people can regain confidence, improve their health and connect with others who understand their experiences. We are incredibly proud of the positive difference this programme is making and would encourage anyone affected by cancer who is looking for a friendly, welcoming activity to come along and give it a try.
