Our local Active Communities Development Plan/ Framework

Working in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, and with other organisations and documents including Sport Wales: Community Sport Strategy 2012-2020: Thriving Clubs, Local Decisions, Quality Education, Committed Workforce, Appropriate Facilities. Public Health Wales - Getting Wales Moving, Public Health Networks, Wrexham Council Plan 2017-22 – People, Economy, Place. Creating an Active Wrexham Action Plan, we have developed our 2018-19 Active Communities Development Plan/ Framework which focusses on developing fun programmes across our 6 themes.

Active Sport

In Wrexham, we develop a wide range of sporting programmes, working with the Sport Wales, Disability Sport Wales, local clubs and National Governing Bodies of Sport. In Wrexham we sponsor an award at the Active Wrexham Sport Awards to recognise local talent. We also support local athletes with our Talented Athlete Scheme to help them with their training.

Active Young People

We work with children, young people and families across Wrexham of all ages and abilities to encourage them into a more active habit for life. We have a range of holiday activities including the Junior Summer Fitness Challenge, school activity programmes; learn to swim opportunities, youth programmes and more.

Active Ageing

We encourage all people in Wrexham, regardless of ability to age well. We host and lead on a range of programmes such as 60 plus free swimming, National Exercise Referral and Active Adults to encourage those aged 60+ to have fun, socialise and focus on improving mental and physical wellbeing. We are committed to improving opportunities for those facing dementia to remain active.

Active Communities

Across Wrexham we work with a large number of community groups and organisations to develop even more opportunities for local people to get involved in fun activities. We support events, deliver activities, working in partnership to set up and deliver community-led programmes to help in making the most of where people live. Our site specific Facebook page and @WrexhamFL twitter account is where you will find us next!

Active Workforce

We want to get all people more active, including those who find their working life in Wrexham a reason for not being as active as they may want. As ‘sitting is the new smoking’, we want to work with more local businesses to find out what their employees would love to do with us to get more active around their job. We work with Active Wrexham Coaching and Volunteer Co-ordinator to provide opportunities to volunteer with our teams.

Active Health

Health and physical activity come hand in hand and we know the importance of preventing health issues later in life. We support local health programmes including; National exercise Referral and Cardiac Rehabilitation. The exercise professionals across our facilities are trained to encourage everyone who wants to improve their health into an opportunity for them.

The partnership between Freedom Leisure and Wrexham County Borough Council began in March 2016 and the second 12 months of operation has proved to be extremely successful with 882,340 visits recorded across our portfolio of leisure centres and active community service in Wrexham that represents an increase of 3.2 % on the previous year. Capital investment has been a key feature during 2017 with over £2.5 million invested into our portfolio of sites that has received a positive impact on our current and new service users. Significant investment into Waterworld has created a 60% larger fitness suite containing the very latest top of the range Technogym and Life Fitness equipment, In addition a purpose built indoor cycling studio has been built with interactive MYRIDE technology that is clearly one of the best in region. A new COSTA Coffee shop compliments the fitness investment to enable customers to stay behind and socialise post workout. Chirk Leisure and Activity Centre has also benefited from a 60% increase in fitness suite and their outdoor floodlight training pitch received investment to convert to 3G pitch with new LED lighting. Gwyn Evans Leisure and Activity Centre and Queensway Stadium have also benefited from a full fitness suite refurbishment and in addition the outdoor pitches at Queensway and Ysgol Morgan Llwyd have been upgraded to 3G. These improved facilities supported by a dedicated team of exercise and fitness professionals are continually focussed on increasing participation by a wide range of groups and individuals. To support this during 2017 we have introduced a number of concessionary packages that include the Queensway Fitness Membership and the National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) Health Benefit membership. These schemes now support our other Freedom concessionary schemes that include the Welsh Government Free Swim Initiative, the Armed Forces Free Swimming, Wrexham Voluntary Carers scheme and the Disability Access to Sport and Health (DASH). In addition all of our pools provide free swimming for Under 5’s We are extremely excited and proud to bring these excellent new facilities to Wrexham and look forward to welcoming all of our existing customers and new to the Freedom Wrexham facilities in 2018-19.
