“Through our dedicated Active Communities services, Freedom Leisure aims to contribute to creating an active nation by working with our valued partners by developing bespoke local programmes to meet local need... where customers, clients and staff matter”

Hannah Gilday, Group Active Communities Manager

Working on behalf of Malvern Hills District Council, and with local organisations including Fortis Living, Sports Partnership, Action For Children, Age Uk, HE & FE institutes, Public Health, Badminton England, Swim England and Street Games , we have developed our 2018-19 Active Communities Development Plan which focusses on developing fun programmes across our 6 themes.

“Active Communities looks to inspire the collective residents of the Malvern Hills District to lead healthier lifestyles, through increasing physical activity levels across a wide range of fun activities such as the Flash Mob, festivals, dance, gymnastics, swimming and more. As the Active Communities Officer I look to develop new projects, using consultation and research throughout the year, striving to improve the offer of low cost, accessible physical activity opportunities. I will be focussing on new projects this year to engage Malvern Hills’ hard to reach groups; Women and girls, Ageing residents, Children and Young people, those on low income and disabilities, supporting those who are typically inactive into sustained activity.”

Adele Hodges - Active Communities Officer

Active Sport

In Malvern, we develop a wide range of sporting programmes, working with the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Sports Partnership, local clubs, National Governing Bodies of Sport and the English Federation of Disability Sport. In Malvern we sponsor the Malvern Hills Sport Awards to recognise local talent. We also support local athletes with our Talented Athlete Scheme to help them with their training, and local clubs with a grant awarded at the event.

Active Ageing

We encourage all people in Malvern regardless of ability to age well. We lead a range of programmes such as 60+ Pilates, Walking Football, Couch 2 5k to encourage those aged 40+ to have fun, socialise and focus on improving mental and physical wellbeing. We are committed to improving opportunities for those facing dementia to remain active.

Active Young People

We work with children, young people and families across Malvern of all ages and abilities to encourage them into a more active habit for life. We have a range of holiday activities including the Junior Summer Fitness Challenge, school activity programmes, learn to swim opportunities, youth programmes and more.

Active Communities

Across Malvern we work with over 50 community groups and organisations to develop even more opportunities for local people to get involved in fun activities. We support and deliver events, deliver activities, promote wellbeing campaigns, set up specific community-led programmes to help in making the most of where people live. Active Workforce

We want to get all people more active, including those who find their working life in Malvern a reason for not being as active as they may want. As ‘sitting is the new smoking’, we want to work with more local businesses to find out what their employees would love to do with us to get more active around their job.

Active Health

Health and physical activity come hand in hand and we know the importance of preventing health issues later in life. We offer and support local health programmes including; GP Referral, Postural stability programmes, and The Big Summer Challenge. Our staff across local facilities are trained to encourage everyone who wants to improve their health into an opportunity for them.
