About Ancient High House
This beautiful house is now believed to be the largest Timber Framed Townhouse left in the country. Built in 1595 for a wealthy merchant it still dominates the High Street today with its imposing wooden structure and multiple windows. The House has rooms decorated in each period style from its construction to the Edwardian period offering you a walk-through time. With changing exhibitions, children’s activities, events and specialist workshops, we have something for everyone to enjoy. Open from Tuesday to Saturday inclusive.

What to do at Ancient High House
We host a number of varied events throughout the year from Art exhibitions to Halloween Fright Night, Period dressed Christmas events to carefully curated exhibitions. We also offer workshops where you can try your hand at learning a new skill with qualified instructors, these can be for adults or families. There is always something new to see.
Ancient High House offers many links to the national school curriculum. As the largest remaining Tudor Town House, it offers a significant place in local history. Built in 1595, the house is a walk-through time, adaptable to suit your school's needs. Emphasising Monarchy, The Great Fire of London, The Tudors or The Stuarts. Our Tour Co Ordinator will happily assist you with your visit, and organise activities to enhance the experience for your children.
The High House is an ideal place for a smaller more intimate wedding. We have two licensed rooms for you to choose from each can cater for up to 25 people. We pride ourselves on giving you a personal experience so please contact our co Ordinator to discuss your needs more fully.
Our exhibitions change throughout the year. It might be one of our own carefully curated exhibitions, in which fascinating subjects are carefully presented in a way to ensure there is something to engage all our visitors. We are also proud to host exhibitions of Artwork, Photography, Crafts and also support local schools in their end of year presentations.
Do you belong to a group looking for something to do in Stafford? Our location means we can fit well into any schedules you might be considering. We can offer your group a bespoke tour of our house, catering to any particular areas of interest you may want to focus on. We can offer tea, coffee and light snacks too but we also have wonderful facilities all around us from The Swan Hotel to the Soup Kitchen as well as the beautiful Victoria Park.
