Freedom Leisure Wales swims to Adelaide to support Team Wales

March 29 2018

As Wales turned red on Friday 23 March we are supporting the nation’s bid for Commonwealth glory at the upcoming games in Adelaide – by swimming 10,245 miles from Cardiff to Adelaide!

Ok so they aren’t actually swimming to Adelaide but to show their support for Team Wales the 16 swimming pool sites are encouraging all swimmers in Powys and Wrexham to get involved and help swim the whopping total distance of 10,245 miles.

With the challenge having started on ‘We Are Red’ day the total distance is to be completed in time to “arrive” at Adelaide to support the team who start competing on 4 April – so far the 16 centres have made a cracking start, crossing the UK, the North Sea and are currently just past the Hague (plotted on a map as the along the route as the crow flies from Cardiff to Adelaide), but they still need a lot more help if they want to succeed!

During the duration of the challenge centres will record total distance swum by over 3500 children during their swim lessons, as well as laps covered by local swimming clubs, individual swimmers and staff, all going towards the challenge total, so if you live near any of the 16 pools listed below; please do join in and support Freedom Leisure Wales by swimming a few lengths to help the team on their way.

Well done to all those taking part in this fantastic challenge organised by Freedom Leisure. It's a superb way to encourage greater participation in swimming and get behind Team Wales at the same time!

Wrexham Cllr Andrew Atkinson Lead Member

Hywell Evans, Freedom Leisure Aquatics Development: “We are pretty excited about this attempt but it’s most definitely not going to be easy! So we really do need our local communities to come together and help us succeed. Therefore to support them in supporting us selected Freedom Leisure pools across Wales will be offering ‘free swimming sessions’ for all ages to come in and clock up the miles! So please ask at your local centre or look online for details.”

Jeremy Rowe, Freedom Leisure Head of Operations Wales, adds: “This wonderful challenge is great on so many levels; it celebrates our longstanding partnerships in Wales by allowing us to show our support for Team Wales, while also providing a fun yet challenging way for our 750 plus staff and 2 million plus annual visitors to get behind them too. In addition it is a great way to engender increased participation in Swimming across Wales, supporting our local authority partners with their own bids to encourage and support local active communities. We also have close partnerships with both Sport Wales and Swim Wales and continually strive in increase participation in sport across the board and swimming.

“So I ask that anyone who is reading this please tries and make it to a pool before 5 April and help us swim to Adelaide, and at least we can guarantee no sharks along the way!”
