Q. Tell us a little bit about your exercise/fitness/weight loss story...ups and downs...
A. I started my weight loss journey in September 2020. I put some weight on during the first lockdown and my health was declining so I knew I needed to make a change and couldn't continue ignoring it. I set myself a goal to lose 5 stone and although I told friends and family about my goal, there was a part of me that didn't believe that I could really do it. I started by researching nutrition and fitness and learning as much as I could. I've tried crash and fad diets in the past and they've never worked long term, always resulted in more weight gain afterwards! On researching, I learnt that it all just comes down to calorie deficit - consume less than you burn! I worked out the healthy amount of calories I would need to consume daily/weekly to still lose weight by calculating my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). This tells you the amount of calories your body needs to function safely based on your measurements and activity level. Working out and going to the gym was important to me alongside this, as my goal was to improve my health, build muscle and lose fat. I go to the gym 5 days a week and my workouts consist of a mixture of cardio and weight training, working all areas of the body. I'm now happy to say that after 10 months I've surpassed my original goal and have now lost 6 stone!
Q. What was your main motivation?
A. I needed to lose weight for health reasons after I noticed negative impacts of carrying excess weight. I decided I needed to listen to my body! My main motivation was my knees. I had previously injured both my knees and the weight was putting strain on them and making it worse. As a dancer, I need to dance in heels but I struggled to walk in them without pain let alone dance! Being able to dance in heels without pain was definitely worth it! I’ve noticed a massive positive impact with my health and I feel so much stronger now!
Q. What were the easiest & most difficult changes throughout your journey?
A. The most difficult part initially was getting used to all the changes! It was tough for the first couple of months especially but I pushed through it and I’m so glad I did! As time went on I started to really enjoy it, the food and exercise made me feel so much better in myself, it really is a lifestyle change now! It was especially tough sticking to it through a lockdown but as long as you stay focused on your goal, you can do it!
Q. Knowing what you know now, what main advice would you have given yourself?
A. Eat more protein! Protein is important for muscle repair and growth, fills you up for longer and your body burns more calories digesting protein than any other macronutrients! I thought I was eating enough when I first started, I’ve since doubled this to the correct amount!
Q. What words of encouragement or simple advice would you give to somebody who is struggling for a starting point?
A. Plan ahead! Planning meals and meal prep is super helpful to prevent you giving into last minute cravings! Make time for workouts, morning or evening, no excuses! Don’t be scared to lift weights. Everybody is different, so it’s just finding out what works for you and your body. Stay determined and focused on your goals, the end result will be worth it! Even if it gets tough, push through and Never Give Up!
