NEW developments at K2's Climbing Centre

July 13 2018

Crawley Borough Council and High Sports Group are delighted to announce a new long term partnership and investment programme in the highly successful climbing centre located at K2 Crawley Leisure Centre operated by Freedom Leisure

The new developments, which are scheduled for Summer 2018, will see a ROCK BOX adventure climbing facility added to the front of the climbing hall, featuring twin 10m Speed Walls. Plus new roped climbing sections that create additional climbing lines and a redevelopment of the bouldering wall located adjacent to the cafe.

K2 will be Olympic ready! With climbing set to be part of the 2020 Olympics we wanted to ensure the climbing wall at K2 Crawley provided excellence in the three climbing disciplines to be included in the Olympic event. These are Bouldering, Speed Climbing and Lead Climbing

High Sports Managing Director, Paul Ackland

"The principal focus is on youth engagement", says Paul Ackland. "We have seen an extraordinary growth in our junior climber programme since K2 opened in 2005 and want to continue to see all of our age based clubs develop".

"Adding alternative sports, such as the climbing wall, to the facility mix at K2 was considered somewhat risky back in 2005", says Councillor Chris Mullins. "However, the consistently high attendance levels and junior club success shows that this was the right decision".

The Junior Squad climbing team at K2 Crawley takes talented youngsters from the Rock Club programme and provides accelerated training and coaching. Success is evident by the Squads competition results and individual performances such as Ben Preston being selected for Team GB.

"We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with High Sports", says Paul Baker from Crawley Borough Council. "After 13 years working with them it is exciting to see the energy with which they are approaching the Olympic challenge and the ongoing development of climbing at K2 Crawley".
