Pool Timetables & WG free swimming

Swimming is a great activity for the whole family to participate in together. Have fun splashing around and practising the life skill of swimming, a great way to cool down on hot days or to escape the rain during the traditional British summer.

Why swim?

A gentile swim can burn over 200Kcal in half an hour. As water is 12 times as dense as air, swimming is a far more effective way of toning your muscles than any other form of cardiovascular exercise that you can do on land. Swimming can support up to 90% of the bodies weight in water, meaning that those with disabilities, injuries or illnesses like arthritis can take part in a comfortable and safe environment. Swimming will help your wellbeing. Swimmers who take part in 30 minutes of swimming 3 times per week have seen improved sleep patterns and lower stress levels.

60+ and Under 16's - Free Swimming Initiative - new approach

Following independent review of the Free Swimming Initiative it was agreed that the current scheme needs to change if it is going to benefit those who currently aren’t able to access it and would stand to gain the most. Freedom Leisure are currently working with Sport Wales and Swim Wales to develop an offer that meets with the needs of the new objectives set out by Welsh Government.

Changes to sessions are scheduled to come into effect from 1st October 2019 and will be subject to ongoing review to ensure they are meeting the needs of their communities.

Funding announced for armed forces free swimming scheme

Public health minister, Rebecca Evans, has announced £75,000 for the Armed Forces Free Swimming Scheme (AFFS).

AFFS was rolled out nationally from November 2015, with all 22 local authorities having a local scheme in place by 1st January 2016. It enables serving members for the armed forces and Veterans to swim for free at participating leisure centres and pools, using their Defence Privilege Card.

Funding announced will support the delivery of the scheme in 2017-18.
