Children are being challenged to stay active through the summer holiday by Freedom Leisure.
The Junior Summer Fitness Challenge (JSFC) asks youngsters aged 4-14 to pledge to be as active as they can during the school holiday from July 23 to September 3, 2018.
Children receive a fitness diary in which to record their activities. Each diary has 10 spaces to record the chosen activity which much be at least 30 minutes in duration.
For every 10 activities completed, children receive a reward from their local Freedom Leisure centre such as vouchers for return visits and small items of merchandise. The aim is to complete 30 physical activities throughout the course of the summer holiday and children can do up to 50 fitness sessions if they wish.
While children can complete the activities at centres including Ash Manor Sports Centre and Guildford Spectrum there is no obligation to do so. Freedom Leisure gives many ideas for active sessions that count – including a family walk, a bike ride, playing football in the park, walking the dog or even washing the car.
“Any activity that gets children up out of their seat and making a physical effort will count as a legitimate activity” says Steve May, Freedom Leisure area manager. “All children are welcome to come and pick up their first JSFC fitness diary and an Active Loyalty Card, they don’t need to be a Freedom Leisure member to take part.”
It doesn’t matter what you do – playing football in the garden, cycling, skate boarding even walking the dog – just stay active and let us know about it by bringing in your completed diaries.
We are also looking for the most active school in your area so make sure you get as many of your school friends involved and the winning school will get a great prize for all those completing the challenge.
We want to encourage children to have fun whilst being active, and anything that gets children up out of their seat and moving will count. We hope to see as many children as possible coming to the centres to pick up their JSFC diaries. - Hannah Gilday - Group Active Communities Manager
Children can register online (click here) or pick up their first JSFC fitness diary from Ash Manor Sports Centre ready to start their first activity on day one of the Challenge, Monday July 23.
