The Friday Night Project aims to improve community cohesion and safety by offering sport as a diversionary activity to all young people in the community, but specifcally those vulnerable youth at risk of offending.
The project, which is free, runs weekly at Freedom Leisure Lydney from 5.30-6.30pm, and is open for those 11-19 years old from the Lydney and surrounding areas. It is supported by the district Community safety partnership, which has enabled the development of our pilot project. Local statistics show that the Forest of Dean District is above the South West Average for antisocial behaviour with particularly concerns in Lydney.
The session, supported by & often attended by PSCOs, enables participants to try out new sports, develop personal skills (including volunteering), compete with friends, make new and meaningful connections and even challenge coaches – all better ways to spend Friday nights than in the streets or glued to phone screens and gaming consoles.
