About half of Freedom Leisure’s sites have swimming pools, which means we look after the safety of thousands of swimmers in the water every week.  We achieve this by employing a lot of Lifeguards, all of whom need training to become qualified, need on-going training every month to maintain their competence and then need to re-qualify after two years.  As you can imagine, Lifeguard training is something we have a lot of experience in delivering.

Becoming a Lifeguard is a great way to get into working in leisure.  Leisure centres with swimming pools need to employ lots of Lifeguards, and there is often some turnover as many staff work as a Lifeguard on a part time or casual basis before going off to do something else.  The qualification you need to supervise a pool used for open public swimming is the RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), which is a five day intensive course followed by an external assessment, and Freedom Leisure Training run lots of these courses throughout Sussex.

We also run the RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC), which will qualify swimming teachers and aquatic coaches as Lifesavers to supervise their students in the absence of a fully qualified Lifeguard.  The Rescue Award is a two day course followed by an external assessment.
